The Seen Detroit was created by, Nelson T. Sanders Jr. A Detroit native who has always had a strong interest in fashion, and an innate sense of style. What most people don't know is that most of his youth was spent on football fields and basketball courts. It wasn't until after high school his passion for style started to grow.
Nelson has worked in retail clothing since the age of 17. He is now part owner and creative director at 1701 Bespoke; which is a custom clothing shop in Midtown Detroit. Over the years his passion, personal style, and knowledge for tailored clothing has grown tremendously. If you know him, you know that he's easy going and a lot of fun to hangout with. Naturally he loves bringing like-minded people together. After years of procrastination, one day he woke up and began calling, texting, and emailing individuals who he'd met over the years. Individuals who were genuinely stylish to him, and who he thought would want to take this journey with him.
Nelson had no idea what he wanted to do, but he knew if he got all of these stylish people together that magic would happen. Lucky for him it was Magic! He started a great photographer (Hayden Stinebaugh), and a great videographer (Justin Millhouse) were both interested and wanted to help him share his vision with the world. Nelson, gave people a date and a time and told them to show up. The first meet up was in February of 2016 in the New Center area of Detroit. Maybe 20-25 people showed and the outcome was out of this world!
After the content was released people were very curious of who we were, what we were, and why we were doing what we were doing. At that time we didn't have answers to many questions, because honestly we didn't really know. After that we created a website, started to acquire members, and developed a mission statement which still changes constantly. Momentum really started to pick up for us as people, organizations and businesses started to reach out to The Seen Detroit wanting to be involved.
It's been 2 years of a lot of fun filled, exciting, and impactful outings. Within those couple of years there's been a lot of lessons learned. From the things we've learned, we've become stronger and wiser. We plan to continue to do what we've always done. That is showcasing great style, networking, and having fun while doing so. The only differences are things are ran a lot more structured and the vision has become clearer.
